Etchings are where I get to indulge my love of Golden Age book illustration and for pen & ink drawings of old. These are on copper using oil-based inks with occasional aquatint. When hand-tinted, I use watercolor and sometimes thinned oils over clear gesso.
Mezzotints are labor-intensive prints made by burnishing down the pre-scuffed (or “rocked”) surface of a copper plate. No etching chemicals are involved. A purely mechanical method to get a beautiful, tonal image.
My etching series for 2013/2014 is included here: The Future Florida Faerie Tales.
